Ballymena United is making significant strides in enhancing its facilities with plans for a new artificial pitch at the Showgrounds. The Mid and East Antrim Borough Council is seeking permission for this development, which involves replacing the existing natural grass pitch with a state-of-the-art 3G/hybrid full-size pitch system. This initiative is part of a broader effort to improve local sports infrastructure and provide better facilities for the community. The application for full planning permission is specifically for the St Patrick’s Link premises, which is home to Ballymena United Football Club. The Planning Committee approved the initial proposal in February, which included the installation of floodlights, a new spectator stand, and protective fencing around the pitch. The planning statement emphasizes that the final surface specification will be determined during the tender stage, ensuring operational flexibility. The project aims to remove the current grass surface and install a new pitch system, complete with a drainage network and automated irrigation. This sustainable upgrade is expected to bring long-term benefits to local sports and recreation, while respecting the character of the area and efficiently utilizing urban land.
