Ballymena United are going against a dominant pattern of signing players in the Irish Premiership by not having any Scottish footballers in their team. While opponents such as Coleraine and Crusaders have constructed their sides with a strong Scottish presence, the Sky Blues are among just three Premiership clubs that lack a player from Scotland.
This difference was pointed out in a recent BBC Sport article, which highlighted the league's notable increase in Scottish signings. Ex-player Declan Caddell commented on the change, stating, "it seems that every player coming in now is Scottish." He explained the attraction, noting, "Scottish players are keen to come over for less money for the opportunity to play at the highest level in the country."
Crusaders started a concentrated effort to recruit from Scotland in 2024 and currently have seven Scottish players in their group. Jacob Blaney, Scot Rough, Cammy Bruce, Elliot Dunlop, Kieran McKechnie, Owen Wardell and Aaron Reid all play for the Seaview club. Wardell joined from FK Be1 and has found the net twice in his first handful of games.
Coleraine have six Scottish players in their squad. They brought in defender Aidan Wilson and winger Jay Henderson this summer from clubs in Scotland, while also acquiring Joe Thomson and Adam Brooks from other teams in the league. Brooks was purchased from Crusaders for a substantial fee with additional payments possible after he scored three times in a match against Portadown.
The setup of the Irish Premiership, which resembles the structure of the Scottish Championship, provides a comfortable setting. Coleraine manager Ruaidhri Higgins mentioned he has consistently sought Scottish players for their attitude alongside their ability. For the footballers themselves, the transfer can act as a platform. Jay Henderson, who moved from Ross County, mentioned the possibility of playing in European competitions as a major draw.
Examples of recent achievements are convincing. Kieran Offord netted multiple goals during a short-term loan before transferring to Linfield. Musa Dibaga secured a move to Dunfermline for an undisclosed amount after being decisive in a crucial promotion/relegation play-off final. Fraser Bryden scored many times to earn a switch to Chesterfield.
For Ballymena, attention stays on their existing group as they navigate a difficult opening to the campaign. They are positioned ninth in the Premiership with a handful of points from their opening matches, recording a single victory, one draw, and several defeats. Their latest sequence of results includes a loss, a draw, and a win, with the most recent game being a narrow away loss to a Coleraine team that included a number of those Scottish signings. Jay Henderson and Aidan Wilson scored for the Bannsiders, while Johnny Hood and Conor McKee responded for United.
The side has found the net eight times but let in nine, giving them a deficit in goal difference. They trail the top team, Coleraine, by a significant margin, emphasizing the challenge they face.
Their upcoming fixture is an away game against Dungannon Swifts. Notably, Dungannon are another of the clubs without Scottish players, but they presently hold a position in the upper half of the standings. The pattern of Scottish players moving to the Irish Premiership looks likely to persist, but Ballymena United's primary aim is to get a good outcome against their upcoming rivals to move up from the bottom part of the division.
