Early Challenges
The start of the SuperCupNI tournament saw Helsingor, a Danish side making their first appearance, struggle with both teams. Their Minor section team began by losing to Atlas on Monday and narrowly lost 1-2 against Ballymena United on Tuesday.
On the same day, meanwhile, in the Junior section, Helsingor faced off against Co Down. The Danes took an early lead but eventually succumbed to a 6-1 defeat. However, they bounced back strongly when they drew 2-2 with Leeds United at Parker Avenue in Portrush.
Coach's Perspective on Ballymena United
After the match, coaching team member Sebastian Henriksen of Helsingor’s Junior section shared his thoughts. He praised Ballymena United's performance, saying: 'There was a great feeling on the pitch today. Everyone knew they were playing against Premier League opposition and it was exciting to come up against Leeds.'
Implications for Danish Football Development
Henriksen highlighted the passion and dedication of youth football in Denmark but admitted that while there are multiple academy sides, not all achieve the same level of success.
‘’I don’t know the exact reasons why [Denmark develops great players],’’ he said. ‘Our best academy has about eight teams within it - we’re very passionate and very dedicated about our football.’'
Ahead of Match Days
Both Helsingor sections will play crucial matches today. The Minor section faces Rosario YC in Castlerock, while the Juniors will face Co Armagh in Limavady. With games wrapping up around 3 pm, team members and supporters have been enjoying their free time exploring Coleraine’s scenic areas.
